Logo designed for one of the largest film and video distribution companies in Greece with exclusive distribution for Home Video of companies such as Metro Goldwyn Mayer, United Artists, Walt Disney, Warner Bros & CBS FOX. At the time everything was designed on paper. That includes company typefaces. Cool looking AV. Remember when you had to go to a store to rent videos? Seems stone age nowadays.

Do I remember? ….my career as a graphic designer began making artwork for movies on videotapes, day in day out!!!!! 😱😂 It was fun picking photos of actors to add on the cover!

I was only on the end of renting them. But since we didn’t have a TV we would go to Laurie’s parents to watch movies we rented. Once we could rent DVDs we started watching movies on the computer.

We also used to rent or buy lots of videos. Somewhere in storage there are lots of ’em in boxes!

We have a small collection of movies on DVDs, old VHS tapes of our flamenco performances and lots of audio CDs and cassette tapes all stored away. Tristan has my vinyl collection of around 300 records and my very good turntable.

Flamenco performances?…

You didn’t know about our flamenco past? We started dancing in 1990. The dance was too hard on my joints, so after a couple of years of dancing, I started studying flamenco guitar. We performed in the mid 90’s before we moved to Spain in 1996, where we studied under master dancers and guitarists. I also played with a folk music group for a couple of years while we were in Madrid.
When we came back to the states at the end of 1999, we formed a small flamenco troupe and performed up until 2006. I got rear-ended by a car in September 2006 and it messed up my shoulder. I eventually had to have shoulder surgery, so I couldn’t play guitar for over a year. During that time, Tristan started college, Laurie also went back to school. After my two cancers (2010 and 2016), my finger tips are numb from chemo, so it’s really difficult to play guitar, especially flamenco guitar. I started relearning to play guitar on electric guitars in 2018. It’s still really hard to play.
If you search for Flamenco on my blog, there is a low quality video of me accompanying a dancer in 1994. There are also a couple of butterfly and crane videos a have some of my flamenco guitar as background music.
On a couple of those VHS tapes we stored away, is a two hour flamenco drama a friend wrote the script for. I wrote all the music and played the music for the show, and Laurie was the lead actress and dancer. We performed the flamenco drama in a large theater in town in 1994. It was a major undertaking. We filled the theater every night, so I think it was a success.

Oh, wow!!!! I knew about your Flamenco guitar playing but I didn’t know all the background! I am definitely checking it out! Your playing today by the way, sounds amazing already, I’m curious as to how much better it could have been! 😲😀

You know how it is with recording. You go back Jack and do it again and again and again, and then piece the best parts together. I don’t know if I could do a live performance without messing up big time these days.

Yes, I know what you mean with recordings, but I think it’s all a matter of getting used to it. When you’re in a state of going from one live to another you’re on a hype, and after a while everything works clockwork. If you told me now to perform live, I’d be messing up big time too! 😉

Θα ήθελα να κάνω ένα ερώτημα σχετικά με την απαρχή της εταιρείας και το πρώτο σήμα της. Παρατήρησα πως στις αρχικές βιντεοκασέτες της AV υπήρχε ένα σχετικά διαφορετικό λογότυπο στο εξώφυλλο, συγκεκριμένα τα Α και V πέρα από το γεγονός ότι ήταν μονοδιάστατα, ήταν και με διαφορετικά χρώματα, κίτρινο και πορτοκαλί, αλλά στο animated logo στην αρχή της κασέτας εμφανίζεται η πρώτη έκδοση του “χρυσού” τρισδιάστατου λογότυπου που οι περισσότεροι από εμάς γνωρίζουμε, ενώ εγώ προσωπικά ειλικρινώς περίμενα ένα intro της εταιρείας χρησιμοποιώντας το λογότυπο του εξώφυλλου. Θα ήθελα να ρωτήσω το εξής, μήπως αυτό το σήμα που ανέφερα ήταν κάποιου είδους πρωτότυπο το οποίο χρησιμοποιήθηκε σαν τύπου placeholder, και αν όχι, πρώτον, είχε παραχθεί κάποιο animated σήμα της AV χρησιμοποιώντας το λογότυπο που ανέφερα και δεύτερον, αν υπήρξαν κάποια πρωτότυπα σήματα που τυχόν σώζονται μέχρι σήμερα και δεν επιλέχθηκαν από τον πελάτη. Ευχαριστώ εκ των προτέρων.

Το λογότυπο είχε καταρχάς σχεδιαστεί, όπως το βλέπετε στην τρίτη εκδοχή και αργότερα ξανασχεδιάστηκε ‘τρισδιάστατο’. Οπως γίνεται με κάθε λογότυπο που σχεδιάζουμε, είχε σχεδιαστεί και ασπρόμαυρο γραμμικό και έγχρωμο με αερογράφο [άλλες εποχές!], ώστε να μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί σε διαφορετικές εφαρμογές. Ως προς τα προσχέδια που δεν επιλέχθηκαν, μετά από πολλαπλές μετακομίσεις τις εταιρίας δυστυχώς έχουν χαθεί.. Ευχαριστούμε για το ενδιαφέρον.
