Would love to know the context for this… all i can find for this period is that there was an easing of tensions toward the mid-to-late 70s (for a while)… but to me this looks more like it suggests the US was inflating a ‘red scare’ for its own purposes?
Fascinating stuff… do inform if you happen to know/remember what the piece was about! 😅

Due to the Truman Doctrine [around 1947], it was decided that Greece and Turkey should receive military aid from the US in order to prevent the countries falling to communism. However they prioritized Turkey as they had interests in the Black Sea – hence the red balloon [Turkey] over the Black Sea, which was -at the time- escalating airspace violations.

Gosh, that’s fascinating. I just looked at a map to sort it all out. So much for my reading of it! Thanks for the outline. ✨✨

It is true though that Trueman was a bit paranoid… blacklisting Hollywood stars etc., if I remember right. Or maybe I’m mixing up Presidents! A lot of history for me goes in one ear and out the other! 😉

Yes, I think its the same Truman… or Trueman! 😉

No, you’re right… it’s Truman. I did a bit of research. So Truman initially was deemed as “lax” on the so-called communist threat in America. After taking some heat for this, he tightened up his policies toward the end. Enter Sen. McCarthy who was the real fear-mongerer. I think that’s it! 😃

I thought you deliberately added the -e- as a word play True-man! 😉
Yep, I recall the man and McCarthyism! 😉

It wasn’t on purpose. I noticed it soon after posting. Sometimes I think those ‘mistakes’ are not really mistakes because they can lead to a greater discussion and possible alternate meanings. Freud called it parapraxis. Jung felt that parapraxis can go beyond the personal unconscious to point to total situations… I spellchecked this today so hopefully, this comment is just “straight up!” 😁

🐦🦜 (was thinking how your comment a long time ago about “the birds” enjoying a particular view was so intrinsically Greek! Aristophanes…) 😅
